Some Life Events of Interest

In Wells Cathedral, next to his effigy over his tomb: 'Master of St Johns College of Cambridge - 1574; Master of Trinity College of Cambridge - 1577; Bishop of Bath & Wells - 1593-1607'. Elected Bishop 3 Jan 1592 at 49yrs of age. Was serving for a time as Vice Chancellor of Cambridge. Will dated 4 Feb 1607 provided £500 for the completion of Almshouses across from St Cuthbert's Church in Wells. A wealthy man, he derived some of income from Bishopric's monopoly on the Mendip lead mines. Photo of effigy on file.
