On 6 March 1693, at Braintree, Norfolk Co., Province of Massachusetts Bay, New England, Samuel Savil was chosen to be one of the town's tithingmen. He was chosen by the freeholders of the town to serve again in 1694. A Bay Colony statute in 1675 ordered that each tithingman "shall take charge of ten or Twelve families of his Neighborhood, and shall diligently inspect them." Tithing men were to present all the idle and disorderly persons, profane swearers or cursors, Sabbath-breakers and disorderly persons, that they may be duly punished and discouraged.9
