Some Background

Sarah Lewes was also known as Sarah Lewis.

Birth - Marriage - Death

ChildSarah Lewes was born circa 1681. This birth year is calculated based on the date of the birth of her first known child. There is no reliable documentation that has been found supporting an exact birth date and Sarah's parentage is unknown.
There were two Sarah Lewes born in Barnstable, in the general time-frame that are frequently mistaken to be the wife of Deacon Ebenezer Hamlin:
(1) the daughter of George and Sarah Lewes, b. 2 Feb 1644 who married first James Cobb and second Jonathan Sparrow; and
(2) the daughter of James Lewes, b. 4 Mar 1664.
The ages of these two Sarahs precludes either of them being the Sarah who was the mother of Cornelius Hamlin.3,4
BrideSarah Lewes married Deacon Ebenezer Hamlin, son of James Hamlin Jr. and Mary Dunham, on 4 April 1698 in Barnstable, Barnstable Co., Province of Massachusetts, New England. The marriage was solemnized by Mr. Russell; It is possible that Sarah was a widow and her maiden name may not have been Lewes since she does not appear to be the daughter of a local Barnstable Lewes family.5,6,7
DeceasedShe died after 1719 in Sharon, Litchfield Co., Connecticut Colony, New England. Another source says she died in Plymouth Co., Province of Massachusetts Bay, New England.1
