Children with Bridget Cooney:

Residences and Censuses

Edward Harrigan appeared on the 1850 Federal Census of Taunton, Bristol Co., Massachusetts, enumerated 21 September 1850. He is shown living in the household of James and Margaret Lynch (both born in Ireland) and their two children. Margaret was the sister of Edward. Edward is shown as 22 years old, born in Ireland; his sister Ellen (30), born in Massachusetts that is an error as she was born in Ireland), and his brother ?, William (24), born in Ireland; five others - all born in Ireland - are also enumerated in this household. William and Edward are shown to have been unable to read or write. These boxes were not checked for Edward at the 1870 Census, however Edward signed his 1873 will with his mark and the will was witnessed by William who also signed with his mark.3
Edward and Bridget Harrigan appeared on the 1855 State Census of Taunton, Bristol Co., Massachusetts, enumerated 20 June 1855.. Their children James and Elizabeth were listed as living with them, Edward's age is shown as 26 years, 2 months, which would mean his birth was in April 1829, before the 20th of the month. Bridget's age was shown as 25 years and 2 months meaning a birth in April of 1830, also before the 20th of the month. Both were shown a born in Ireland; their 3 year old son James was born in Massachusetts, as was their 7 month old daughter Elizabeth.12
He and Bridget Harrigan appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Taunton, Bristol Co., Massachusetts, enumerated 1860. Their children James, Elizabeth, Eugene and Edward were listed as living with them. A 51 year old Zylpha Beaton is also included in the enumeration for this household. Edward's age is shown as 34 which would not be consistent with earlier and later census returns which would make his age actually closer to 30 years. Bridget's age of 30 years is consistent with the other census returns.13
Edward and Bridget Harrigan appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Taunton, Bristol Co., Massachusetts, enumerated 18 July 1870. Their children James, Elizabeth, Eugene, Bridget, Edward, William and Mary were listed as living with them. Edward was a laborer, born in Ireland, but was now a citizen of the United States. He valued his real estate at $2400. Bridget, was also born in Ireland and was keeping house for the family. 18 year old James was working as a moulder; his 16 year old sister Lizzie was listed as "at home"; their siblings Eugene, Bridget, and Edward were at school, and the youngest children, 6 year old William and one year old Mary were at home with their mother and Lizzie. all of the children had been born in Massachusetts. Their son Joseph was not included in the family listing so presubably he had died... he would have been 3 years old in 1870.5

Will

Edward Harrigan prepared a will dated 2 January 1873, in Taunton, Bristol Co., Massachusetts. He named his wife Bridget as the sole benficiary of his estate, so long as she remained his widow. If she were to remarry or die, his estate was to pass to his son William and his heirs. William was to "pay over the sum of five dollars to each of my other seven children." Edward signed the will with his mark. William, as a witness, also signed with his mark.14
