Some Background

Nathaniel Donham was also known as Nathaniel Donham Jr. Some sources refer to him with the Jr. suffix, acknowledging that he was probably not technically a Junior but was referred to as such to differentiate between an older Nathaniel (possibly an uncle) living in the same proximity. Nathaniel's parentage is in question but it is now generally accepted that his father was not also named Nathaniel.5

GroomHe married Keziah Crosley, daughter of John Crosley and Alice Malin, circa 1775 in Perth Amboy, Middlesex, Province of New Jersey, British Middle Colonies. Some sources give the year if their marriage as 1773. However, the birth date of Nathaniel Donham's daughter Mary is given as 5 May 1774. And, "Mary Dunham Lee names her son David Sutton (Lee), therefore it seems unlikely that she was from his (Nathanile Donham) second marriage to Kezia Crosley."9,3,10

He served during the Sullivan Expedition into New York in the 1st New Jersey Regiment, Continental Line, under the command of Col. Mathias Ogden. As his name appears on a payroll for August 1779, (with the rank of Sergeant) he would have participated in the battles against the Loyalist/Iroquois forces at Chemung (13 August 1779) and Newtown (29 August 1779)... these were the only two major battles of the Sullivan campaign.6,12,13
